The Challenge
Australia’s federal government is focused on enhancing the country’s sovereign manufacturing capability, aiming to help local industries scale up by becoming more competitive and resilient. Industry bodies advocate for digital manufacturing transformation as part of the Industry 4.0 vision, which is widely supported both domestically and internationally.
However, the current technology baseline for Industry 4.0 is not mature enough to fully support digital manufacturing. Existing technologies are unable to accurately represent key physical entities in manufacturing, such as complex industrial machines, products, materials, and production personnel. Additionally, the data generated by these entities have significant physical dependencies and interdependencies, which affect the accuracy and reliability of models.
Moreover, current solutions are tailored to specific production lines, machines, and products, making them difficult to adapt across different manufacturing settings. This lack of flexibility significantly increases costs and diminishes the potential benefits of digital manufacturing, highlighting the need for more robust, adaptable, and cost-effective solutions to drive Australia’s manufacturing transformation.
The Australian Research Council Industrial Transformation Research Hub for Future Digital Manufacturing (Digital Manufacturing Hub) is a collaborative consortium funded by the ARC, Industry Partners, and University Partners. With Swinburne University of Technology as the Administering Organisation, the Hub operates its headquarters at Swinburne and has strategic nodes at RMIT, the University of Sydney, the University of Queensland, and Macquarie University.
Our Strategy
Our strategy is to drive industry-aligned digital innovation to address current and future challenges in Australia’s manufacturing sector, fostering economic growth. By leveraging AI and IIoT-powered innovations, we enhance productivity, resilience, and competitiveness. We overcome limitations in existing Industry 4.0 technologies, such as the inadequate representation of industrial entities and data dependencies, delivering practical, future-proof solutions. Through collaboration, we develop impactful technologies and empower both industry and the research workforce for global leadership.
